Do You Know Rio?
Locations, Housing & Safety
IES Abroad Center
The center is located in a safe and beautiful neighborhood easily accessible by the bus system in Rio. Here the students will attend classes and have a comfortable setting to relax and catch up throughout the week. The facility includes: classrooms, student lounges, outdoor space and more!
Housing & Homestay Security
We want to make sure that your greatest challenge is deciding which landmarks to see first or discovering the best café—not finding a place to live where you feel comfortable. We do our best to locate housing that is reflective of how the local students are living. Our goal is that when you arrive to Rio, you feel at home.
All participants will stay in homestays- located in the southern part of the city, considered Rio Sul. Homestays generally house one to two students, are safe, secure and where the authentic study abroad experience begins and ends. Internet access is available.
It is a top priority to not only provide a fully immersive program but a safe one so careful measures are taken when selecting our student's home away from home.
All homestays go through a vetting system that require a referral, recommendation letters and a commitment to the safety and education of all students. Both the home and surrounding area is vetted as well to ensure safety and accessibility. All students have their own bedroom with lock.
Prior to arrival, all homestays are provided information about students and all students are given a homestay profile and contact information to begin communication during pre-departure. No overnight guests are permitted unless they have been authorized by IES Abroad. Consistent contact is maintained between IES Abroad and homestays before, during and after programs. All safety measures are outlined in a student handbook and reinforced during orientation.
IES Abroad works closely with the consulate and a representative comes to orientation at ALL centers to speak directly to students
The safety of all Global Players and IES Abroad students is our highest priority. On the ground in Rio IES Abroad will be the active body for which all of our emergency protocol and safety measures are established and enforced. They are leaders in this arena and have exceptional standards for ensuring that all students not only stay safe but thrive while in their hands.
All staff are well-trained and knowledgeable about safety procedures and protocols. Unlike most study abroad providers, IES Abroad has a full-time Chicago-based Dean of Students Office, that establishes and oversees their health and safety guidelines, and consults with the IES Abroad Centers to maintain high standards of safety.
All IES Abroad Centers have plans for evacuating students to safety during emergencies. IES Abroad staff overseas discuss their extensive and thorough student safety guidelines with students during their arrival orientation, and again later, should the need arise.
Every Center has enforced security systems, and local staff have developed close relationships with local police. The Centers receive regular updates from the local U.S. Embassy or Consulate regarding U.S. citizen safety.
In general, IES Abroad Centers are not located near other American programs. They are usually on or close to university campuses.
Global Players requires that all students have international health insurance so they are adequately covered while overseas.
