AMSTERDAM
The course offerings at the University of Amsterdam are unique to the Graduate School of Social Sciences, Amsterdam, and the Netherlands as a whole. Culture and Society will touch on Dutch history, language, commerce, and culture, including the ever-curious legalization of soft drugs and prostitution while Sport and Social Mobility takes an in depth look at how sport development transcends socio-economic barriers. These courses will be a interesting, memorable, and a valuable addition to your academic purview.
Sport & Social Mobility
Can sport serve as a vehicle for social mobility of disadvantaged social groups? How and to what extent are different forms of social capital created through sport participation? Sport and Social Mobility: Crossing Boundaries by Ramón Spaaij takes up these questions through a critical examination of the ways in which sport facilitates or inhibits upward social mobility.
Drawing on four case studies, the book provides a rich sociological analysis of people’s lived experiences of sport in diverse social, cultural and political contexts, ranging from sport-for-development programs in Brazil and the Netherlands to rural communities and the Somali diaspora in Australia. The first international comparison of and critical reflection on the relationship between social mobility and participation in non-professional sport, this book will be essential reading for anyone interested in sport’s potential for social inclusion.
Dutch Culture & Society
Throughout this course the common themes that will be identified are the structure of the society (political system, religion, education, research, mass media, the (de-)pillarisation); demography and spatial planning (the 'Randstad' and the 'Green heart', urban sociology and migration); Dutch social policy (viz. welfare and health care, ethnic minorities etc.); Dutch history, Dutch lanquage, literature and arts; controversial and contemporary ethical-social issues and Dutch socio-cultural identity. The course is highly interactive and students are expected to come up with their own experiences in their daily life in the Netherlands and relate these to the topic of the class.
